Monticello 杰弗逊总统故居
杰弗逊总统是美国的一位非常了不起的伟人。他自撰的墓志铭是：
杰弗逊领导写成的美国独立宣言里有一段极有名的人权宣言 "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
杰弗逊一生里致力于立法解放黑奴，禁止买卖黑奴。
杰弗逊拥有两百四十多个黑奴。在生前，他释放了总共两名自家的黑奴。在遗嘱里他释放了五名黑奴。所释放者，都是为他生了至少
一个孩子的 Sally Hemings 家人，但是他没有释放 Sally 和她生下的六个孩子。Sally 的两个孩子逃离 Monticello。杰弗逊没有缉捕他
们。杰弗逊的传记上写道『他生活上开销很大，负债很多，所以不能释放家里的黑奴。 此外，他认为必须立法解放黑奴。在禁黑奴法成
立之前，别人都没释放黑奴，所以他也不释放黑奴。』 在他死前，维琴尼亚州和美国联邦都没有通过禁奴法，因此他用了一辈子黑奴。

“ There must doubtless be an unhappy influence on the manners of our people produced by the existence of slavery among us. The whole
commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the most boisterous passions, the most unremitting despotism on the one
part, and degrading submissions on the other. ”
"A black person could have the right to live free in any country where people judge them by their nature and not as just being good for labor
as well."
"Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free. [But] the two races cannot live in the same
government. Nature, habit, opinion has drawn indelible lines of distinction between them."
